EPIC values at the EPIC Towers
My Reflections
It is no news that Andela is the best technology company in Nigeria and Africa at large, it is also one of the best in the world right now. A feat that has been achieved within just 5 years of its conception. This wouldn’t have been possible if not for the Andela Core values that have been put in place, the EPIC Values.
The EPIC Values are very important traits and characteristics everybody should have, especially if you want to work with Andela. These values are the prime mover that drives a person to always be at their best and best behaviour in all situations and challenges they find themselves.
What’s my reflection on these values?
I’ll start by stating that EPIC is just an acronym for Excellence, Passion, Integrity and Collaboration; I’ll go over each value in the order of appearance.
EXCELLENCE: This simply means that an aspiring Andelan, like myself, must be ready to always learn, create a friendly space for colleagues to ask for help, ask for help when I’m having blockers and also take active steps that ensure growth as a people. Excellence also means I have to write high-quality codes that are in accordance with best practices.
PASSION: I must have a strong and barely controllable desire to write codes that contributes in a positive way to the society and the prosperity of communities. I must also have a belief, that everyone has the special ability to be great and it is up to me to help them unlock it. Also, acknowledging the fact that it takes consistent hard work and time to become good at our profession and putting in the work daily.
INTEGRITY: Doing the right thing at all times, with or without supervision is just the simple definition of what integrity means. This implies that I must always give credit for Intellectual Property; for example, a code block that is implemented but not written by me, which was not tweaked or modified should be credited to the author.
COLLABORATION: Sharing knowledge and skills with other colleagues to help with their growth must be a thing I live by. I, also, must always be curious, treat others respectfully, be honest and unequivocal with peers and community members.
Conclusion
In other to grow technically, professionally, psychologically and as a leader, the EPIC values are what I must have rung on my head daily and also must be what I breathe in and out with oxygen.
